Salt Bath F.A.Q's

What about Environmental Considerations? Several processes and material handling systems - from simple hand held units to completely automatic, computerized desludging and counterflow wash/rinse systems - are available to treat salts, scrubber run-offs, and salt residues for environmental compliance.
Econosal™ for Nitrite/nitrate salt recycling
BaClean™ for Barium chloride detoxification to water-soluble and harmless barium sulfate.
•Hexavalent Chromium Conversion in alkaline or aqueous solutions to water-insoluble trivalent chromium hydroxide.
•Hydroxide neutralization to harmless alkali chlorides

How much maintenence is required? Maintenance and operation of salt baths cannot be seperated. Salt baths are by nature a corrosive environment, and preventive as well as prompt corrective maintenance are a necessary part of salt bath operation for specification performance.
An inventory of spare parts permits quick replacement of electrodes, resistance heaters, radiant tubes, switches, pots, pumps, motors, and thermocouples.

What are some safety issues? Any industrial operation can be hazardous when carried out incorrectly. Salt baths run at high temperatures, and while the bath itself is not flammable, it can promptly ignite combustibles that come in contact with it.
•Personnel must take logical precautions to protect themselves from contact with molten salts or any vapors.
•Introduction of water into high temperature baths may cause steam or salt eruptions to occur.
•Mixing unlike salts carries the danger of potential explosion.
•Inadvertant dipping of certain aluminum-magnesium alloys can produce explosion.
•Steel hardened in a cyanide bath must have cyanide completely removed prior to a nitrite bath to prevent an explosive cyanide/nitrate mixture.
AJAX representives will instruct you in the proper operation of its systems to avoid these known hazards.
