Electrodes, embedded in the wall, below the salt line, are sealed against corrosive attack at the air-salt interface. The submerged electrode design also lends itself to economical 3 phase operation in deeper furnaces when 2 or more tiers of electrodes are utilized.

    SE Series High Heat -
for high speed steel high heat and for copper brazing.

  • Temperature uniformity within 5° anywhere in the bath
  • No scaling, pitting, or decarb because molten salt completely surrounds work and remains as a protective film during transfer to quench.
  • Less distortion and cracking result from uniform preheat and rapid, uniform heating rate

  • Aluminum Brazing Furnaces
    Type HC Furnaces
    1050°F to 1150°F

  • Alloy or Graphite Electrodes
  • Fast brazing in minutes
  • All joints brazed simultaneously in a single immersion
  • Temperature uniformity assured by Electrodynamic circulation
  • Selective heating with partial immersion
  • Labor saving compared to torch brazing
  • Custom design for specific customer requirements
  • Gas - Fired Furnaces
    Type DGT Furnaces
    400°F to 1150°F

    • Internal heating at the lower range of operating temperatures
    • Temperature uniformity of ± 10°F
    • Easy tube replacement
    • Nozzel mix or premix pressure burners for combustion
    • Savings where gas is an obvious choice over electricity
    • Field tested in successful operation for years, efficient & dependable
    • Custom design to fit specific needs

    Isothermal Quench Furnaces
    For Austempering & Martempering

Molten salt quenching for austempering or martempering requires a furnace capable of several functions, and the resulting designs are much different from salt bath furnaces employed in heating or austenitizing work.

AJAX considers four primary factors for all Quench Furnaces:

1.Bath Temperature Uniformity - This is essential for consistent metallurgical properties. Internal heating of the bath can be accomplished electrically by using either immersion heaters or electrodes. Gas-fired immersion tubes can also be employed. It is important to automatically dissipate heat from work being quenched by either internal or external cooling means. For light duty, forced air or air/water can be directed to the exterior of the pot. For heavy duty, controlled cooling is provided by internal coils, using water or air/water injection.
2.Proper Agitation of the bath - Thorough agitation is necessary to remove heat quickly and efficently from the work. Constant or variable speed propeller agitation provides a uniform flow through the workload being quenched.
    3. Removal of bath contaminants - To achieve optimum hardness and other physical properties, foreign contaminations must be removed. This is accomplished by a continuous filtering and automatic dumping system such as the Ajax Sludge Dumper. Comprised of a scoop-shaped filter basket connected to a driving cylinder mounted adjacent to the furnace wall, the basket is automatically raised up and out of the bath - automating chloride removal. Readily installed on new furnaces, the mechanism can also be retrofitted on existing salt baths.
    4. Water addition to the quench bath - For isothermal quenching of heavier sections, water increases quenching power. Small amounts of water added to a nitrate-nitrite salt drives vapor from the bath as hot work enters and gives a faster cooling rate. Both manual and automatic systems are available for adjusting the frequency and duration of water additions.

AJAX can custom-design Quench Furnaces for both batch and in-line applications.

Although the great majority of isothermal quench furnace installations have been for bath processes, very successful high production, continuous processing lines have been installed with capacities approaching 7½ tons/hour.

Other AJAX innovations for salt bath systems

    BaClean™
    Barium Chloride Detoxification System

A fully automated Barium Chloride Detoxification System that turns Hazardous salts into Nontoxic Residual Waste.

Barium chloride containing heat treating salts are idealfor hardening of tool and high speed tool steels.

If discarded as supplied, all barium chloride containing heat treating salts have the "Characteristic of EP-Toxicity"

The AJAX BaClean™ system detoxifies the barium chloride automatically and removes the water insoluble barium sulfate in a filter press in the form of an insoluble filter cake.

    Econosal™
    Salt Reclamation System

Recovers up to 93% of nitrate-nitrite salt now lost during salt-bath treatment and eliminates discharge of dissolved salts into sewage systems.

Field tests conducted at a large East coast manufacturing site show that the Econosal™ system can recover up to 93% of the nitrate-nitrite salts now lost in the quench, wash and rinse operations of salt bath heat treatment.

Even a small one-shift line which adds less than 100 lbs. of salt per day and only two gallons of fresh hot water per minute during a 40-hour week would save enough on current salt replacement costs to pay for an Econosal™ unit in less than one year.

Pollution is controlled as this closed loop system recovers salt and evaporates water eliminating discharge into public sewage.

Installation takes less than a day. The system consists of a reactor distillation vessel located at the furnace, a metering system, and a heavy duty brine pump.

Operation and maintenance costs are negligible.

    UNI-HOIST™
    Programmable Hoist for Material Handling

Developed for salt bath systems but suitable for other applications where fixture loaded work must be carried through a series of repeated steps. Useful for light loads at high speeds & heavy loads at low speeds.

    • Unique monorail design - suitable for new and many existing material handling operations.
    • Compact and Adaptable - (light or heavy loads) for many material treating applications such as heat treating, plating, pickling and washing.
    • Modular design - radically cuts installation time with minimum floor space requirements.
    • Accurate, adjustable programming - through the use of a microprocessor-based controller plus the positive, no-slip horizontal and vertical drives.
    • Central control, yet manual override - the control console incorporates a programmable controller together with two, independent emergency stops for lift and travel motions, plus safety interlocks. Manual Mode stations can belocated at any convenient floor location for manual takeover at any point in a given cycle.
    • Pretested and preadjusted - AJAX employs a large test set-up in the factory where each UNI-HOIST™ is preassembled and thoroughly tested prior to shipment.
    • Full factory service - available if and whenever needed.
    • Custom Design - any practical options can be provided by AJAX to meet specific custom requirements.
