hiladelphia's City Hall has a complex and interesting history.
s the nation's largest municipal building ( larger than the U.S. Capital), it holds the dubious distinction as being its most expensive. It has often been surrounded in controversy.
he building's Second Empire Mode of French Renaissance Revival architecture, so popular at the start of construction, was outdated and abhorred by its completion. A 30 year construction period required major building alterations as designers struggled to keep abreast of major technological advances like electricity and elevators.
ity politics played a major role in the building's construction history. Delays and confusion were often the direct result of political interference. Everything from site selection, to funding requests, to design, materials, and occupancy, was questioned and second guessed. Several attempts were made to manipulate the state created Building Commission and take over the project.
espite it all, the project was eventually completed. Philadelphia's City Hall today, still stands proudly in the heart of the City - a testament to it's own monumentality.
