A bronze eagle is perched above each clock face. Calder has many sculptures throughout the building depicting North American animals. These eagles, weighing 7000 pounds each with a 12 ft wingspan, are meant to convey through their threatening mien and gesture, the power of a nation just emerged from the crises of the Civil War.
