Increase tool life with Salt Bath Nitriding

Nitriding provides a thin, hard case on high speed steel tools which will increase tool life two or three times, and in some cases four or five times. The nitrided case (.001 - .002") is extremely hard, and must be rated by scratch test, file test, or by Vickers readings.

Prior to nitriding, preliminary heat treating is done in salt baths, followed by a draw and grinding. The nitriding bath usually runs at 1000-1050°F, at or below the drawing temperature.

With careful liquid salt bath treatment throughout the heat treating process, there is little if any change in dimension of parts.
